Ways to Stay Warm for Less

Let’s face it: when your living room starts to feel like an igloo, then you know it’s time to turn the heat up. Of course, your home heating unit can turn that arctic chill into a tropical breeze — but it might start to raise your energy bills in the long run, let alone your monthly statement for gas/oil. Indeed, there are some ways to stay warm on a budget, but what might they entail? Let us explain:

Create Draft Guards

One of the least expensive ways to keep the heat in your home is to create draft guards. Indeed, you can always purchase your own — but they might be a tad expensive if you have to obtain more than one. The best type of draft guard can be created using a pool noodle from the dollar store. Although this item might be seasonal, there are a variety of stores that carry them all-year-round.

Once you obtain your pool noodle(s), you’ll want to measure it to the length of a typically drafty door in your home. Next, cut the noodle to size, followed by creating a slit down the middle on one side; you’ll want the other side to stay intact. After that’s complete, take the noodle and slide it onto the bottom of the door. Within seconds, you’ll have a draft-less room for a fraction of the cost!

Swap your Bedding

Another great way to keep toasty on a chilly day is to change your bedding. Sure, you might love that floral print from the summertime — but the sheets aren’t thick enough to keep you warm. When it comes to winter bedding, you’ll want to use sheets that are not only thick in material but are made from either heavy cotton or a jersey material (think sweatshirt-like fabric).

If you don’t own any winter bedding, then we highly recommend shopping for some through an online superstore, where you’ll get the perfect set for much less. Of course, if you’d prefer to use what you already have, then try some throw blankets from around the house! The extra layers will be keeping you warm all winter long!

Rearrange the Furniture

Tired of the way your living room is arranged? If that’s the case, then now is the perfect time to rearrange the layout — but why is that? Well, if you happen to know where your heating vents are, then there’s a strong chance that you placed either a couch or end table in front of them. This not only blocks the heat from getting to you, but it also increases the urge for one to turn the thermostat up even higher than what’s actually needed.

To resolve this issue, you’ll want to scout out where your heating vents are located and where you can move any piece of furniture blocking them. Of course, if you’re not sure where to place a specific piece, then it would be wise to move that furniture to another room in the house until it’s time to turn the A/C on. Within a few minutes, you’ll notice how much more heat you’ll get, per room, at a fraction of the cost (and without the temptation to turn your thermostat up a notch).

Become a Chef

A wonderfully delicious way to keep warm is to start cooking more. Granted, you might be a culinary expert, concocting incredible meals and treats on a daily basis — but if you’re more inclined to order pizza, then you might want to start heating up that stove.

Think about it this way: when you start to prepare your own dinners, any excess heat from your stovetop/oven will be emitted into the air, creating a blanket of the best-smelling warmth around. If you’re not sure what to cook as a meal, then we highly recommend baking some cookies or brownies to heat up your home. As an added bonus, you’ll also have some sweet treats to snack on while enjoying every ounce of your cozy home!
